DÉCOR INSPIRATION

Create a dramatic fairytale setting indoors or outdoors! If you are having an indoor affair, you could set the scene with a grand balloon arch “castle” entrance and hand out magical wands, crowns or swords as guests arrive to the party.  Set up a photo area to capture everyone’s creative costumes – you can create your own photo backdrop using fabric strips tied to a string (or just go ahead and purchase the super gorgeous pastel backdrop curtain pictured below by WithLOVEeventdecor).
For a cohesive feel choose one or two main colours for your party and try to stick to them for most of your decorations. We like purple as a main colour as it is traditionally a magical colour and it suits both boys and girls. Pinks, golds and blues make nice highlight colours. Check out our fairytale printables

If you are having an outdoor celebration it is the perfect chance to set up an enchanted wood! Try fairy lights, homemade lanterns, gold spray-painted pumpkins, a moss-covered table with ‘potions’ and a basket of red apples, fake cobwebs and all sorts of treasures hanging from tree branches. (With a bit of effort an enchanted forest theme could certainly work indoors as well – check out this magical tree canopy kit for some inspiration.)

Pro Tip: Sun jars (solar powered LED lamps inside frosted mason jars that automatically light up at night) and LED candlesticks make great centrepieces. They give light, while adding a flicker of magical charm to the table.

A cheap and easy way to decorate your party is by creating your own cardboard castle!  Cut large cardboard sheets into a castle shape, paint some stones and cut some windows. You could even add some flags and a drawbridge. It’s a great activity to get the kids involved in too.

ENTERTAINMENT IDEAS

Costume ideas for a fairytale party are endless. Boys and girls as young as one can get involved (and adults too!). For an royal occasion, guests can come dressed elegantly in mini ball gowns and flowing capes in the style of Cinderella, Prince Charming and King Arthur. For a more casual atmosphere guests can choose their favourite fairytale character such as Red riding hood, Tinkerbell, Snow white (or a dwarf), Elsa, Rapunzel or Shrek.

For easy entertainment, try a game of royal musical chairs using waltz music (think beauty and the beast).  As a variation on the classic version of pin the donkey, try pin the crown on the princess. Castle obstacle courses, magical jewel prize hunts or bobbing for "poisoned" apples are also great for parties like this.

Hiring a local magician or face painter is always guaranteed to bring lots of fun to your event. Set up a slay the dragon piñata. You could also create a craft station for making tiara’s, crowns, decorating a shield or magical wands.

FOOD IDEAS

Get playful with your food ideas when you launch a fairytale themed party. Colourful tea cakes reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, complete with mismatched tea cups, are great for parties set in the afternoon. For a cute touch place punch in small glass bottles and label them "Drink Me". For regal presentation serve the drinks in royal goblets!

Castle or princess dresses are popular cake themes for fairytale parties but you could also choose a dragon, unicorn or other favourite mythical character. For snacks serve up cookies shaped like Cinderella’s shoes or mini crowns on  royal themed plates. Check out this simple frog in a pond recipe to give the guests a frog kissing good time!
